Founded by Sheena Cardozo, Balance Pilates Studio in Panjim, Goa, was created with a simple yet meaningful vision: to provide a calm, comfortable and personalised space where people can learn Pilates correctly and develop confidence in their bodies. As the studio’s founder and Pilates instructor, Sheena brings together professional training, hands-on experience and a genuine passion for helping people move better.

Her journey into Pilates began unexpectedly. She initially joined a Pilates studio in a front-desk role, where being surrounded by the practice sparked her curiosity. Over time, she became increasingly involved with the sessions and was given the opportunity to train as an instructor. What began as a job gradually developed into a career she deeply enjoyed.

After gaining around three years of experience, Sheena completed 200 hours of professional Pilates training, along with additional training in Prenatal Pilates. This experience gave her the foundation to establish Balance Pilates Studio and create the kind of intimate environment she had envisioned.

Pilates with a Personalised Approach

At the heart of Balance Pilates Studio is the belief that Pilates should be accessible to everyone, regardless of age, fitness level or previous experience. Unlike conventional workouts that can sometimes focus heavily on repetition and intensity, Pilates places greater emphasis on control, precision, alignment and an understanding of how the body moves.

This philosophy is reflected in the studio’s deliberately small sessions, with only two clients accommodated at a time. The limited group size allows Sheena to closely observe each individual, identify movement patterns and provide corrections whenever necessary. Rather than treating clients as part of a standardised class, the studio focuses on understanding the person in front of the instructor.

Each session is adapted according to an individual’s experience, lifestyle, goals and physical requirements. Posture, strength, flexibility, mobility and movement control are considered while exercises, resistance, repetitions and intensity are modified accordingly. Even when two clients share the same objective, their training can look very different because their bodies and needs may require different approaches.

Reformer Pilates for Strength and Body Awareness

Balance Pilates Studio specialises in Reformer Pilates, offering sessions designed to support strength, mobility, flexibility, posture, coordination, core control and overall body awareness. The practice encourages clients to focus on the quality of each movement rather than simply completing a particular number of repetitions.

Through controlled exercises and mindful movement, clients can gradually develop a stronger understanding of their bodies. The emphasis on alignment and core engagement also encourages better movement habits that can extend beyond the studio and into everyday activities.

For Sheena, Pilates is not simply another form of exercise. It is a way of helping individuals become more conscious of their posture, movement and physical capabilities while building strength in a controlled and sustainable manner.

Supporting Women Through Pregnancy

Balance Pilates Studio also offers Prenatal Pilates for women who wish to remain active and maintain strength and mobility during pregnancy. Since pregnancy brings continuous physical changes, the programme is adapted according to the individual’s stage of pregnancy, abilities and requirements.

Sessions focus on controlled movement, posture, mobility, strength and helping women remain comfortable and connected with their changing bodies. Safety remains central to the programme, with exercises and intensity adjusted as necessary.

Sheena also emphasises the importance of working alongside appropriate healthcare guidance, encouraging clients to follow the advice and clearance provided by their healthcare professional. This ensures that prenatal exercise remains thoughtful, responsible and suited to each individual.

Movement, Recovery and Overall Well-Being

The benefits of Pilates extend beyond building physical strength. Its focus on alignment, controlled movement, flexibility, coordination and body awareness can help individuals develop a better understanding of how they use their bodies throughout the day.

For those returning to exercise following an injury, Pilates may also provide a form of controlled movement when appropriately modified and when suitable for their individual circumstances. The practice can encourage gradual development of strength and mobility without making exercise solely about intensity.

There is also a strong mental component to the practice. Pilates encourages individuals to slow down, concentrate and remain present during movement. This mindful approach can create a greater sense of connection with the body, making wellness feel less like a routine obligation and more like an enjoyable part of everyday life.

A Philosophy Built Around Balance

Sheena’s approach to fitness is influenced by her love for travelling, exploring new places, experiencing different cultures and, of course, food. These interests have shaped her belief that wellness should not involve constant restriction or depriving oneself of the things that bring happiness.

For her, balance means staying active, eating well, enjoying good food, taking time to relax and experiencing life. The same philosophy informs the studio’s approach to fitness, where the goal is not to punish the body or constantly focus on appearance, but to become stronger, healthier and more confident.

This perspective also reinforces the accessibility of Pilates. Clients do not need to be exceptionally flexible or already physically fit to begin. Balance Pilates Studio encourages individuals to start from wherever they are and progress at a pace appropriate for their bodies.

Celebrating Progress, One Client at a Time

For Sheena, some of the most rewarding moments since opening the studio have come from witnessing client progress. Improvements may be as noticeable as performing an exercise that once seemed difficult, developing better balance or gaining strength. At other times, progress is reflected in something more personal, such as becoming more comfortable and confident with movement.

Hearing clients say that they feel stronger, move better or genuinely look forward to their sessions reinforces the purpose behind Balance Pilates Studio. Building the studio from the ground up and earning the trust of clients as they work towards their individual goals has become one of Sheena’s most meaningful achievements.

Growing with Purpose

Establishing a studio independently has also brought its share of challenges. Beyond teaching Pilates, Sheena has had to manage scheduling, marketing, finances, communication and the everyday responsibilities involved in running a business. Building awareness and establishing trust with clients were particularly important during the studio’s early stages.

Through patience, consistency and a willingness to learn, each challenge has contributed to her growth as both an entrepreneur and instructor. Rather than compromising the studio’s core philosophy as it develops, Sheena intends to preserve the personalised approach that shaped Balance Pilates Studio from the beginning.

Looking ahead, she hopes to expand the studio to other areas of Goa while continuing her own education through specialised Pilates training. She also aims to introduce programmes that address different stages of life and a wider range of fitness needs.

A Sustainable Approach to Fitness

Balance Pilates Studio ultimately represents Sheena Cardozo’s belief that fitness should be personal, sustainable and enjoyable. Its intimate sessions, individualised instruction and emphasis on mindful movement provide an alternative to one-size-fits-all approaches to exercise.

As the studio continues to grow, its ambition remains rooted in quality rather than simply scale. Sheena hopes Balance Pilates Studio will become a place in Goa associated with thoughtful instruction, personal attention and sustainable wellness, while reminding every client that meaningful progress begins by simply choosing to start.
