For both skilled fishermen and those who are new to the sport, there are some of the finest fishing spots in Goa. Here are a few of the best places you should check out
Polem, Goa
With its cool blue water, dense forests and jagged cliffs, Polem makes an ideal angling haven. A secluded beach; one of the last untouched places in Goa; which is why it is known as “The Last Asylum”.
Though it might be missed by some tourists this hidden gem is worth going for. This thick jungle around Polem ensures that only the most persistent will get here. A few huts on the beach provide refreshments, and this adds to the experience.
Herein lies water that glows blue-green with a fluorescent hue found nowhere else on earth. The most commonly caught species at Polem Beach are small-to-mid-sized guitar sharks. Night fishing can produce great results with squid or fresh mackerel as bait. During monsoons local fishers often cast nets for different species including snappers, croakers and guitar sharks.
The Goa Tiracol River (Terekhol)
The most profound waters in Goa are found in Tiracol, making it a favorite place for serious fishermen. For example, the river’s crystalline deep blue waters lend themselves to clear viewing of its bottom. The tranquility and abundance of fish draws local anglers who often spend their days here.
A sight that one would not forget at night is when the waves are moving on Tiracol. You can find many different kinds of fish here like Giant Trevallies, Barramundis, Red Snappers, Groupers and Threadfin Salmons.
Reis Magos Jetty & Rocks
Reis Magos is another popular fishing spot in Goa where you will have different types of fish depending on seasons and migration patterns. While the jetty is a favorite with many anglers, the large rocks surrounding it are also good places to fish from. The best time to catch barramundi at this site is between November and January. Other species include snapper, grouper and sea bream (locally called Palu), towards the end of monsoons especially.
Fort Aguada, Goa
The waters surrounding Fort Aguada are stunningly gorgeous, extending in a serene blue color to the horizon. Even with a good pair of binoculars you can see some dolphins playing at the bay.
Towards the base of the fort lies some small ruins and on the other side, there is a tongue of rocks that runs into the sea. This rocky outcrop is an excellent place for fishing. The deep sea here has a greenish-blue tinge especially during November and December months. Fish species include Big Grouper, Snapper, Giant Trevally, Barramundi and Threadfin (though rare). Early mornings and late evenings are perfect angling hours.
Ferry Wharf/Jetty, Old Goa
Fishing at the Ferry Wharf in Old Goa has become tough as fish have been frightened away over time. Amateurs might find it hard but using live bait is necessary. Still, this experience can be enjoyed by even less experienced anglers. The catch here includes Barramundi, Snapper, Bream, Tarpon, Catfish and Grouper. PS: “pittioes” means live shrimp or small bait fish used here.
These fishing spots in Goa offer a mix of thrill and quietness like no other place can guarantee you anywhere else in the world. Irrespective of whether you are an experienced angler or just starting off– these locations will deliver unforgettable experiences!
