Involvement with FIFA

Dr. Melissa’s career reached a significant milestone when she became the first female sports physiotherapist in India for Team India at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Her role involved providing comprehensive care that addressed both the physical and functional aspects of sports injuries. This experience was incredibly fulfilling, as it allowed her to help players achieve optimal recovery and peak performance, prevent re-injuries, and recover from setbacks. One of her most memorable moments was during the opening match of the U-17 Women’s World Cup, where India faced off against the USA. Standing there, as the National Anthem played, she felt an overwhelming sense of pride. Although she wasn’t on the field as an athlete, being part of the team in a different capacity was a dream come true.

Working with the FIFA team presented its challenges but was immensely enjoyable. Dr. Melissa was part of a diverse staff comprising managers, coaches, and administrators, all working towards creating an environment where players could perform at their best. The behind-the-scenes work often goes unnoticed, but it’s crucial in ensuring that players are in top form to make a winning team.

Working with Indian National Teams

As a sports physiotherapist for the Indian national football team and FC Goa, Dr. Melissa worked with elite athletes in high-performance environments. Working with professional athletes striving to win championships is a unique experience. These athletes push their bodies to the limit, and their greatest fear is an injury that could sideline them. Dr. Melissa  understands the pressures they face, especially when major competitions are on the horizon. Athletes are often tempted to push through pain to avoid missing out on important events. However, as a physiotherapist, her focus is on ensuring they receive appropriate rehabilitation to return to their sport as safely and quickly as possible.

Dr. Melissa’s approach involves various treatment methods and rehabilitation techniques tailored to the specific needs of each athlete. She helps them navigate the fine line between pushing their limits and avoiding overtraining. This delicate balance is crucial in helping athletes maintain their peak performance levels without compromising their health.

Role in Khelo India Khelo Initiative

Dr. Melissa Luis also contributes significantly as a sports scientist for the Khelo India an  initiative by the Government of India through MYAS, which aims to develop young athletes across the country. Her role involves providing technical and practical support on training, injury prevention, technique analysis, nutrition optimization, and addressing psychological issues such as motivation and stress management. By identifying the strengths and weaknesses of young athletes, she helps create individualized training programs that enhance their performance while minimizing the risk of injury.

In this capacity, Dr. Melissa works closely with coaches and other support staff to ensure that athletes receive comprehensive care. Injury Prevention and Management

In her practice, Dr. Melissa frequently encounters common injuries among football players, including muscle injuries such as hamstring and groin strains, knee and ankle ligament injuries and bone related injuries such as fractures and concussions. To prevent and manage these injuries, she employs various strategies and protocols. One of the key programs she utilizes is the FIFA F-Marc 11+ injury prevention program, which is designed for youth and adult teams, both men’s and women’s.

When an injury occurs, Dr. Melissa Luis follows the ‘PEACE and LOVE’ protocol for initial treatment. This protocol involves protecting the injury, elevating and compressing the affected area, and gradually reintroducing movement. Following initial treatment, she focuses on rehabilitation, which includes balance, coordination, and muscle strength training. She combines aqua therapy and land-based therapy to help players regain match fitness. Additionally, she monitors players’ training and match play workloads using GPS technology to prevent overuse injuries and ensure optimal recovery.

Advancements in Sports Science

Advancements in sports science and technology have significantly influenced Dr. Melissa’s  practice. New tools and methods have revolutionized how she approaches treatment and rehabilitation. Genetic technology, for example, can enhance performance, health, and safety. Sensory garments, helmets, mouth guards, monitors, and wearables provide valuable data that help optimize training and recovery protocols.

Recent innovations like high-altitude simulation training, anti-gravity treadmills, exoskeletons, bio-harnesses, smart fabrics, and virtual and augmented reality have become integral to her work. These technologies allow for more precise analysis and targeted interventions, leading to better outcomes for athletes. Dr.Melissa continuously stays updated with the latest developments in the field by visiting and learning from various physiotherapy and sports science centers both domestically and internationally.

Importance of Recovery

Recovery is a crucial component of an athlete’s training regimen. Dr. Melissa  emphasizes that recovery techniques vary depending on the athlete’s age, sport, and level of participation. However, the general principle remains the same: athletes need to balance training and recovery to prevent overtraining syndrome, where the body can’t keep up with the demands placed on it.

Different types of recovery include short-term or active recovery, such as stretching, massage, foam rolling, and yoga, as well as passive recovery and long-term recovery, which involves scheduled rest days. Nutrition also plays a vital role in recovery. Consuming the right foods and drinks after exercise helps replenish glycogen stores in muscles and optimize protein synthesis.

Sleep is another critical aspect of recovery. Dr. Melissa highlights that both sleep duration and quality are important. Athletes need to maintain a consistent sleep routine to ensure they recover fully from their training sessions.

Mental Health in Sports

Dr. Melissa  addresses the mental health aspects of athletes’ well-being by educating them, their coaches, support staff, and families about the symptoms of different mental health conditions. She ensures that athletes can seek help without fear, utilizing a multi-disciplinary approach that includes the services of a sports psychologist.

Athletes face unique stressors such as the impact of injuries, overtraining, social media scrutiny, and the pressure to perform. Dr. Melissa helps them develop coping strategies to manage these challenges and supports them mentally and emotionally. By fostering a supportive environment, she helps athletes maintain their mental health and overall well-being.

Working with Diverse Teams

Working with athletes from different sports and cultural backgrounds requires adaptability. Dr. Melissa conducts thorough research to understand the specific demands of each sport she works with.
