Thousands of guests thronged the recently concluded second edition of the popular community festival, Festa do Povo, in Panaji, that embodied the philosophy “of the people, by the people and for the people.” The festival, held over December 14 and 15, is synonymous with Goan culture, environment, heritage and camaraderie.

The two-day event showcased a vibrant mix of cultural elements, drawing large crowds over both days. Day one featured traditional Shigmo dances, storytelling on mythical rakhondars (protectors) and the seven sisters and craft activities for children by Bookworm, a local community bookstore. Performances included the Kaustubha Ballet, the dekhni dance and music by Sound of Music, with Goan fado singer Sonia Sirsat and the Stuti Choir delivering a memorable musical collaboration. The events were held simultaneously over two stages, ensuring a spirit of dynamism to the performances, even as the attendees danced and frolicked to upbeat musical performances.

The festival was co-organised by the people of Panaji, the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) and Imagine Panaji, along the mangrove-lined pedestrian spine at Patto Plaza near the Spaces building. Residents from various city wards, especially those from heritage homes and blocks, actively participated in planning the festival.

Festa do Povo showcased a diverse range of cuisines, including Goan-Portuguese, Hindu Saraswat, and Muslim specialities, prepared by local home chefs, Panaji residents and culinary experts from across Goa. Joining them were international chefs and renowned restaurants, contributing to a vibrant culinary spread that celebrated Goa’s rich diversity. A dedicated feni bar and beverage counter highlighted local beverages, enhancing the festive ambiance.

Children and adults attending the festival could also play and revel in the newly constructed skating rink and test their skills at an artificial rock climbing wall, which was erected at the venue.

A key attraction of the festival was an art exhibition displaying works by 20 artists, seamlessly merging creations from seasoned professionals and aspiring art students to celebrate Goa’s artistic spirit. Adding to the charm were intimate storytelling sessions, set amidst the scenic mangroves of Patto Plaza, which vividly brought Goa’s rich folklore to life, captivating attendees.
