As per the reports, Goa’s Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik, had asked the Central government whether they were considering granting Goa special status under special provisions of the Indian constitution. The Union minister of State for Home Haribhai Chaudhary replied to the query stating that the matter was examined and found to be not feasible in Goa’s case.

Special status for Goa has been in demand for many years. Main reason cited for the demand is to protect the identity of the state, which has been affected by a large number of in- migration and depleting land resources.

A special status similar to the one granted to Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Mizoram etc, was requested by the Goa government to the union home ministry in the year 2013. In India there are 11 States for whom special provisions have been made under Article 371 of the Constitution of India.
