GIM to launch faculty program to incorporate sustainability in education curriculum

Panaji, Oct – Committed to promoting sustainability in higher education, The Centre for Excellence in Sustainable Development (CESD) of the Goa Institute of Management (GIM) has announced a Faculty Development Program to incorporate sustainability in course curriculum in order to weave in the principles of sustainability in the students’ education curriculum.

The Centre for Excellence in Sustainable Development (CESD) commenced operations in 2019 focusing on environmental sustainability to strengthen and support this commitment. In line with achieving the mission of GIM, CESD will be organising the FDP titled ’Incorporating Sustainability in Course Curriculum’ on the 25th of October 2023. The program will feature a keynote address by renowned economist and academic Prof. Jeffrey Sachs, who serves as a Director of the Centre for Sustainable Development at Columbia University in the United States.

The objective of the program is to integrate sustainability into the academic curriculum, not as a separate course, but as an inherent part of the students’ education itself. The GIM campus has gained global recognition for sustainability measures adopted by its students to meet the United Nations’ sustainable development goals.

The Faculty Development Program (FDP) will include a panel discussion featuring experts from academia and the corporate sector on ‘Sustainability in Higher Education: Perspectives and Practices’ offering diverse perspectives on embedding sustainability into education. The Program will be open to educational institutes in Goa.

The panel will feature Sunita Sule, director Country Development, BASF India Limited, Dr. Abhinav Jindal, deputy general manager and senior faculty, National Thermal Power Corporation – Power Management Institute India, Dr. Ajit Parulekar, Director GIM and Prof. Sebastian Morris, Senior Professor, GIM.

To reinforce the impact, GIM will also conduct a workshop on October 30, exclusively for its faculty, led by Prof. PD Jose, a professor at the Indian Institute of Management- Bangalore, which will provide practical guidance on integrating sustainability into the curriculum.

Dr. Ajit Parulekar, Director of GIM, stated, “We are committed to promoting sustainability in education. This FDP and workshop represent significant steps towards making sustainability an integral part of the curriculum. We are honoured to have experts like Prof. Jeffrey Sachs and distinguished panellists contributing to this initiative.”

Dr. Diya Guha Roy, Assistant Professor (Marketing) and Member, Centre for Excellence in Sustainable Development at GIM and the faculty-in charge for the FDP added, “This FDP provides a platform for fruitful discussions and insights into sustainable practices in higher education.”
