Goa witnessed a shortage of beef on Sunday as State-run Goa Meat Complex Limited (GMCL) witnessed a power outage in the morning and could not supply beef.

Uday Pednekar, Director of GMCL informed that since it rained on Saturday night. There was a power outage on Sunday morning. Due to which beef could not be supplied on time.

Manna Bepari, President of Qureshi Meat Traders’ Association said that Sunday is a day when large quantities of beef are sold. A shortage in supply not only upset consumers but also traders whose losses amount to lakhs of rupees. He gave an example of Mapusa where traders have suffered a loss of ₹ 7 lakh.

Pednekar mentioned that supply was restored by the latter half of the morning.

Bepari mentioned that supply of beef reached the markets only by noon but association members refused to accept it since they weren’t sure of the quality of the meat since there was a power outage while the meat was in the chillers at the facility.

He criticized the management of GMCL since generators at the facility were not put to use.

GMCL is the lone abattoir operating in Goa. Around 25-30 animals are slaughtered at GMCL everyday.
