As monsoon arrives it brings along with it the refreshing scent of the rain and joyous sight of childrens dancing and playing in the rain. The puddles everywhere, roads filled with water, the fields looking green as ever gives a very soothing vibe. The sound of the birds chirping and frogs croaking feels so pleasant to hear. However it also means that our loved and dear ones also come home wet very often, especially the childrens while coming home from school.

We witness the coughing and sneezing all day long in the house. This sight can make us all a little concerned for them. But fear not, because amidst the pitter-patter rain drops, the Goan households rely on some amazing homemade remedies that can help you soothe your cold and cough. These remedies are both effective and gentle for children as well as adults. Below are a few remedies that might help you feel relief from your cold and cough.

Tulsi and Ginger Tea

When it comes to a good cup of a healthy tea, these two herbs are the first thing that comes to the mind of anyone who loves tea, the tulsi which is also known as the holy basil is much cherished in ayurveda for it very powerful antibacterial, antiviral and anti- Inflammatory properties. Ginger is a well known ingredient for its ability to soothe the throat and congestion.  

Ingredients

  • 10- 12 fresh tulsi leaves
  • 1 inch piece of fresh ginger ( grated for more better flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon honey 
  • 2 cups of water

Steps

  1. In a saucepan boil water 
  2. Add the grated ginger and the tulsi leaves 
  3.  Let it simmer for a while ( 10 minutes ) 
  4. Strain the tea in a cup and add honey to it 
  5. Let it cool slightly before you take a sip or give it to your child. You can drink this tea 2-3 times a day for relief from cold. 

Peppercorn and jaggery concoction

The black pepper has a natural type of proto nutrient that helps breakdown fats. The black pepper is also a  natural expectorant that helps breakdown mucus and phlegm. The jaggery provides a soothing effect on the throat and boosts the immune system. 

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
  • 1 piece of jaggery 
  • 1 cup water 

Steps

  • First crush the black peppercorns.
  • Boil the water and add the peppercorns 
  • Let it simmer of sometime 
  • Add the jaggery and stir it till the jaggery dissolves. 
  • Let it cool slightly before serving it or drinking it. Drink this once a day to clear the respiratory tract.

Kokum and Honey infusion

The kokum is helpful in reducing blood sugar levels, it also promotes a healthy gut bacteria that improves digestion. The kokum is also known for its cooling properties and ability to reduce throat irritation. The honey acts as a natural cough suppressant and has antibacterial properties. 

Ingredients

  • 3-4 dried kokum peels
  • 1 teaspoon honey 
  • 1 cup warm water 

Steps

  1. Soak the kokum peels in warm water for 15 minutes.
  2. Strain the infusion and mix honey in it. 
  3. Let it cool to a room temperature before giving it to your child. Drink this once daily to soothe the throat and reduce coughing. 

Turmeric Milk 

The turmeric contains anti-inflammatory properties and the milk helps to soothe the throat. The turmeric milk also helps to purify blood and improves blood circulation. It contains antioxidants and antimicrobial properties that can help boost the immune system.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 cup milk 
  • 1 pinch of black pepper powder( to enhance curcumin absorbtion) 
  • Honey or sugar to taste ( optional )

Steps

  1. Heat the milk until its warm 
  2. Add turmeric powder and black pepper
  3. Stir well and add honey or sugar to it if needed
  4. Let it cool down to room temperature before serving it or drinking it. 

Garlic and Honey syrup

Garlics have been used in traditional medicine around the world. The main health ingredient in garlic is acillin. Garlic is a potent antimicrobial agent that helps fight off infections. The honey is naturally high in antioxidants. The honey coats the throat and reduces irritation and coughing. this is the perfect home remedies to relief cold.

Ingredients

  • 4-5 cloves of garlic
  • 2 tablespoon of honey 

Steps

  1. Crush the garlic cloves to extract the juices
  2. Mix the crushed garlic with honey 
  3. Let it sit for two hours for the flavours to blend. 
  4. Have a teaspoon of syrups twice a day to combat cold symptoms
