Today, that same 85-year-old machine occupies a place of pride in KOSHUE’s Goa studio, serving as a reminder of where it all began.

Growing up surrounded by women who viewed sewing as both an art and a life skill shaped Kajul’s appreciation for craftsmanship from an early age. Her grandmother believed that stitching empowered women by nurturing confidence and independence, values that continue to form the foundation of the brand.

The Meaning Behind KOSHUE

The name KOSHUE beautifully reflects the label’s design philosophy. It combines the Sanskrit word Kosh, meaning “treasure,” with Hue, symbolising colour. Together, the name translates to a “treasure of shades,” an idea that is reflected across the brand’s collections through an extensive palette of over forty carefully curated solid colours.

Kajul envisioned a label that celebrated rich, versatile hues instead of relying heavily on prints. She recognised a gap in the market for contemporary garments that combined bold colours with distinctive silhouettes and exceptional craftsmanship, leading to the birth of KOSHUE.

Designing an Instantly Recognisable Identity

Minimalism at KOSHUE is far from ordinary. Every garment is thoughtfully designed to create an unmistakable identity that extends beyond labels or logos.

The brand’s signature lies in its innovative use of pleating and cording techniques, resulting in sculptural silhouettes that are both modern and timeless. Kajul’s ambition has always been to create pieces that can be recognised instantly as KOSHUE simply through their construction and detailing.

Her creative approach has been deeply influenced by Japanese fashion designers, whose emphasis on structure, form, and meticulous craftsmanship left a lasting impression during both her undergraduate studies and postgraduate education in London. These influences continue to shape the brand’s clean lines, asymmetrical cuts, textured surfaces, and contemporary aesthetic.

Finding Inspiration in Everyday Life

Every KOSHUE collection begins with an observation—something familiar that is reimagined through fashion.

The Wired Collection, for instance, draws inspiration from the intricate network of electrical wires stretching across the sky, translating their rhythm into striking garment constructions. Pleated Affair celebrates one of the label’s signature techniques through refined fabric manipulation, while Filaments transforms the delicate structure found inside a light bulb into intricate zari cording.

Most recently, the brand introduced Corded Magic, a collection that underwent months of development before its launch and has already received an enthusiastic response from customers.

Rather than simply designing clothing, KOSHUE transforms ordinary visual experiences into garments that balance artistic expression with everyday wearability.

Learning Through Every Milestone

The early years of KOSHUE were defined by experimentation and perseverance. Kajul actively participated in pop-up exhibitions across different cities, using each event as an opportunity to better understand her customers and refine the brand’s direction.

Not every exhibition proved successful, but each experience provided valuable insights. A turning point arrived just six months after launching the label when one particular exhibition attracted exactly the audience KOSHUE had been searching for. Long queues formed outside the stall, and the overwhelming response generated enough sales to recover earlier investments, reaffirming Kajul’s belief in her vision.

An equally memorable milestone came while she was studying in London. After being discovered through Instagram, KOSHUE received an invitation to participate in a designer pop-up, where the brand resonated strongly with an international audience, demonstrating that thoughtful craftsmanship transcends borders.

Recognition Through Craftsmanship

Long before establishing KOSHUE, Kajul represented India at the prestigious IFTTI International Design Competition in Shanghai during her time at the School of Fashion Technology, Pune. The opportunity allowed her to showcase her creative perspective while celebrating elements of Indian design on a global platform.

Over the years, KOSHUE has also been worn by notable personalities including fashion stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania, Gurleen Gambhir, Nauheed Cyrusi, and Ahana Kumra. Yet, the brand deliberately places greater emphasis on the experiences of its customers than celebrity endorsements, believing that exceptional craftsmanship speaks louder than promotional campaigns.

Building a Brand with Purpose

Like many independent fashion labels, KOSHUE’s journey has involved overcoming significant challenges. One of the most demanding aspects has been educating customers about original design concepts, as every garment incorporates carefully considered construction techniques that differ from conventional fashion.

As the business expanded from a solo venture into a growing team of ten, maintaining production quality, implementing efficient systems, and managing logistics became equally important. These experiences have strengthened the brand while reinforcing Kajul’s commitment to consistency and excellence.

Kajul’s artistic pursuits extend well beyond clothing design. She is also an accomplished portrait artist specialising in hyper-realistic drawings. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she accepted commissioned portrait projects, and the income she earned became the financial foundation that enabled her to launch KOSHUE.

Dance also plays an important role in her creative life, particularly Bachata, which provides both relaxation and another outlet for artistic expression. These diverse creative interests continue to influence her approach to design, encouraging experimentation while maintaining attention to detail.

Fashion with Longevity and Responsibility

At the heart of KOSHUE lies a philosophy of creating garments that remain relevant far beyond seasonal trends. Every piece is designed to be versatile enough for multiple occasions while retaining its individuality over time.

Sustainability is equally central to the brand’s operations. KOSHUE follows a zero-waste approach to pattern making wherever possible, repurposing leftover fabrics into decorative elements or entirely new designs.
