The legend of the Rakhandar, or Rakhno, is one of those stories that has been passed down through generations. One such story is that of a young boy, now recounted by his own son. Many years ago, the boy, who is now a father, was attending the Bodgeshwar Jatra in Mapusa with his friends. They walked all the way from Porvorim, a journey filled with anticipation and excitement. However, in the bustling crowd of the jatra at the fairground, the boy became separated from his friends and found himself alone. Despite the initial panic, the boy remained calm.
The Encounter with the Rakhandar
He knew his way back home and recognized many familiar faces around. Deciding to return home on his own, he made his way to the exit of the fairground. Just as he was about to start his journey back home, an old man from his neighbourhood approached him. The man inquired where he was headed, and upon hearing the boy’s story, offered to accompany him home, citing safety concerns.
A Mysterious Disappearance
The boy and the old man walked together towards Porvorim. When they neared the boy’s house, the old man told him to go ahead and assured him he would watch until he was safely inside. As the boy reached his door and turned to thank the old man, he found that he had vanished. Puzzled, he assumed the man had left once he saw the boy was safe.
Realization of Divine Intervention
The next day, the boy’s father thanked the neighbor for accompanying his son the previous night. To his astonishment, the neighbor revealed that he had not attended the jatra at all. It was then that they realized the boy had been accompanied home by the Rakhandar, who had taken the form of the old man from their neighbourhood to ensure the boy’s safe return.
The Protective Nature of the Rakhandar
This story is one of many that illustrate the protective nature of the Rakhandar. In Goan culture, it is believed that if you find yourself lost and alone, you can pray to the Rakhandar. He will appear in the guise of someone you trust, guiding you home safely. However, tradition dictates that you must never turn back to look at him during this journey.
