Accidents happen every day here in Goa. Traffic is generally a mess, especially during peak hours. Given this kind of situation on the road, one would assume that there would be a semblance of caution and care while driving. And the authorities have even put safety measures in place like speed governors. However, this was not what happened in the case of 3 boys from Khandepar, close to Ponda while they were on a joyride by car.

A joyride ends in disaster

The accident happened on Sunday. According to news reports, the driver was allegedly driving under the influence and crashed the car into the road divider near the Housing Board Colony, Curti. This joyride has cost at least one person his life.

The three youth involved in the joyride and subsequent accident were Pradeep Gaonkar (23), Saish Kotarkar (23) and Rahul Gaonkar (26). The Ponda police reported that the three were proceeding towards Ponda from Khandpear in a Zen car borrowed from a friend.

As the car approached the Housing Board Colony on its joyride, the driver lost control and ended up hitting the road divider. The car then flipped and turned turtle and skidded upside down for more than 10 metres. With all this, Pradeep was thrown clear of the car from his seat next to the driver.

Saish Kotarkar, who was driving, sustained serious injuries. The other passenger Rahul Gaonkar got away with minor bruises.

Pradeep succumbed to his injuries on Monday morning while undergoing treatment at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim. Saish is still undergoing treatment at GMC and is said to be in a serious condition.

The medical report has also revealed that the three boys were under the influence of alcohol while on their joyride.

The Ponda police have registered offenses against Saish Kortarkar under sections 279, 338 and 304 A of IPC. Further investigations are also on as well.
