Through vibrant illustrations, thoughtful storytelling, and design-led creations, the brand has built a distinctive identity by celebrating Goa’s culture, heritage, nature, and everyday life. Rather than relying on familiar imagery associated with the state, BluToad presents a more personal and authentic perspective, one that invites people to discover the many stories that make Goa unique.

Founded by designer and illustrator Teamea Costa, BluToad has grown from a single illustrated magnet into a recognised creative brand offering a diverse collection of products inspired by the places, traditions, language, and experiences that define Goa.

From a Childhood Dream to a Creative Venture

The idea behind BluToad began long before the brand itself. As a child, Teamea often came across the popular “I Love Goa” T-shirts featuring silhouettes of coconut trees and sunsets. While they were instantly recognisable, she knew that one day she wanted to create something that represented Goa in a different way.

Her creative interests eventually led her to study architecture at the Goa College of Architecture before pursuing design at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad. Along the way, she explored several professions, including architecture, radio jockeying, newspaper writing, teaching, and design. Each experience broadened her creative outlook, but it was only around thirteen years ago that she decided to establish BluToad.

Interestingly, the brand did not begin with apparel as originally imagined. Instead, its first product was a simple illustrated fridge magnet. Seeing the finished piece confirmed that she had found the direction she wanted to pursue. What started as a single product gradually developed into a creative brand centred on illustration, storytelling, and thoughtful design.

Celebrating the Goa Beyond the Obvious

BluToad was founded on the belief that Goa has far more to offer than its commonly recognised tourist attractions. While beaches and palm trees remain part of the state’s identity, the brand focuses on the details that are often overlooked, its native flora and fauna, local cuisine, architecture, traditions, villages, language, and everyday moments.

Growing up in Goa, Teamea realised that many people were unfamiliar with aspects of the state’s cultural and natural heritage. This inspired her to create illustrations that not only captured these subjects visually but also shared information about them. From the very beginning, each illustration included accompanying text, whether it was a local name, a brief description, or an interesting fact. Wherever appropriate, Konkani was incorporated into the designs, reinforcing the importance of preserving the state’s linguistic identity alongside its visual culture.

Although digital platforms have made information about Goa far more accessible today, BluToad continues to present familiar themes through its own artistic lens. Each collection reflects a unique interpretation, encouraging people to appreciate both well-known and lesser-known aspects of the region.

Designs That Become Keepsakes

BluToad’s products are rooted in illustration, but each one is created with the intention of telling a story. The brand’s collection includes magnets, coasters, books, bookmarks, greeting cards, posters, stickers, tote bags, games, and other illustrated merchandise.

While Goa-themed products remain at the heart of the brand, BluToad also develops festive collections, custom commissions, and original designs that appeal to customers who appreciate its distinctive artistic style. Every product combines clean illustrations, carefully chosen colours, and thoughtful details to create pieces that are both visually engaging and meaningful.

Rather than functioning simply as souvenirs, BluToad’s creations encourage people to connect with memories, experiences, and places that hold personal significance. Whether someone relates to Goa’s food, wildlife, architecture, traditions, or landscapes, the brand offers a wide range of subjects that allow individuals to find a meaningful connection.

A Creative Process Inspired by Everyday Life

Many of BluToad’s ideas emerge from everyday experiences and personal interests. Teamea enjoys trekking, spending time outdoors, and observing nature, interests that have naturally influenced several of the brand’s products.

One such project originated from a desire to teach her child the names of flowers commonly found in Goa. Researching books, online resources, and speaking with others eventually led to the creation of a memory matching game featuring twenty-six flowers from A to Z, with each flower identified in both English and Konkani.

Similarly, Goa’s birdlife inspired another educational product, a two-piece puzzle introducing children to the state’s diverse bird species. These creations demonstrate how BluToad combines creativity with learning, transforming simple observations into engaging products that celebrate local knowledge.

Typography has also played an important role in Teamea’s creative journey. Introduced to lettering during her school years, she developed a lasting appreciation for letterforms that later inspired the series Letter Now Than Never, featuring Goan village names illustrated in a variety of distinctive lettering styles.

Creating Emotional Connections Through Design

Since its inception, BluToad has been guided by a simple objective: to create products that allow people to take home a genuine piece of Goa.

The brand’s first magnet collection included a note describing it as an opportunity to “take home a little piece of what Goa truly is.” That philosophy continues to shape every collection. Instead of creating generic memorabilia, BluToad focuses on evoking emotion through illustrations that reflect authentic experiences and familiar moments.

By exploring subjects ranging from local food and nature to architecture and cultural traditions, the brand hopes that every individual will discover something that resonates personally. Each product serves as a reminder of a place visited, a tradition experienced, or a memory worth preserving.

Meaningful Milestones Along the Journey

Among BluToad’s many achievements, one of the most memorable came shortly after the brand was established. A series of illustrations titled You Know You Are in Goa gained widespread attention on social media despite carrying neither the BluToad name nor the artist’s signature. The artwork was shared extensively, with friends even forwarding the illustrations back to Teamea without realising she had created them.

The overwhelming response demonstrated how strongly people connected with the illustrations and reinforced the brand’s vision of portraying Goa through relatable everyday experiences.

More recently, BluToad’s board game Flavour Trail – Goa was selected through an open call for food-themed games at the Serendipity Arts Festival. Developed while researching Goan recipes for the brand’s 2026 calendar, the game introduced participants to the state’s culinary traditions through an engaging and interactive format. Watching visitors enjoy the experience became another significant milestone in BluToad’s creative journey.

The Challenges of Building an Independent Brand

Like many independent creative businesses, BluToad has encountered its share of challenges. Maintaining consistent quality requires working with reliable vendors, something that continues to demand careful attention.

Marketing has presented another obstacle. Naturally reserved, Teamea initially hoped that the work itself would be enough to attract customers. However, as social media became increasingly important for independent businesses, she recognised the need to become more visible. Limited retail presence and selective participation in pop-up events meant that many people assumed BluToad was a newly established brand, despite its years of creative work.

Balancing personal creative ideas with customer interests has also become an important part of the brand’s evolution, encouraging continuous learning while remaining true to its original vision.

Creativity with Responsibility

BluToad’s philosophy extends beyond design. The brand embraces small-batch production, allowing it to minimise waste while understanding which products resonate most with customers before expanding production.

It also seeks to reduce unnecessary packaging and decorative extras wherever possible, reflecting a commitment to lowering its environmental impact. This considered approach demonstrates that creativity and responsible production can work together without compromising quality or originality.

Above all, BluToad remains a creative outlet driven by curiosity and a genuine love for Goa. New ideas continue to fill sketchbooks and notebooks, ensuring there is always another illustration waiting to become a finished product.

Looking Towards the Future

BluToad continues to evolve while remaining rooted in its original purpose. A new illustrated calendar for 2027 is currently in development, alongside several new products and creative collaborations that will further expand the brand’s collection.

Despite its growth, BluToad remains committed to celebrating Goa through thoughtful design, meaningful storytelling, and authentic illustration. Every product reflects countless hours of research, sketching, production, and collaboration involving not only the founder but also the many artisans, manufacturers, and partners who contribute behind the scenes.

The brand also highlights the value of supporting local creators and small businesses. Every purchase encourages independent creativity, while every appreciative message and shared recommendation helps sustain the journey.
