~ Kerkar’s lecture, ‘Glimpses of Goa’s Histories,’ will explore both well-known and lesser-explored aspects of Goa and its significance to India’s history.
Renowned artist Dr Subodh Kerkar will take the stage at Kala Academy in Panaji on April 5 to deliver a lecture titled ‘Glimpses of Goa’s Histories,’ which will shed light on various facets of Goa’s rich and layered history—both well-known and those that have been forgotten or overlooked.
Presented by the Museum of Goa, the lecture promises to go beyond the postcard version of Goa, beyond the beaches, nightlife, restaurants and nostalgia. With an artist’s eye, Kerkar will explore various facets of the state’s history, from architecture to diaspora, from Goan cuisine to its colonial past.
“Glimpses of Goa’s Histories will offer facets of Goa’s past that lie beyond the realm of popular memory. Through the lens of an artist and an avid reader of history, I will discuss stories of Goa, from its architecture and food to its culture and diaspora and the important role it plays in India’s history,” Kerkar said.
The lecture presents an opportunity for listeners to discuss the stories of Goa, its people, its identity and its culture.
The renowned Goa-based artist and founder of the Museum of Goa in Pilerne will present his insights and share compelling stories drawn from personal and lived experiences during his lecture. The event will mark the launch of ‘Goa: Subodh Kerkar’s Canvas,’ a book by Kunal Ray that captures the essence of Kerkar’s work, from sand installations to terracotta sculptures, documenting how his art intersects with history, identity and resistance.
“Subodh Kerkar’s canvas of Goa combines the state’s people, its waters and their intertwined history in a visual tour de force. From resplendent paintings of Goan houses to larger-than-life beach installations, Subodh’s artwork exists at the confluence of aesthetics and social consciousness,” said Ray, who teaches literary and cultural studies at FLAME University, Pune.
The book intimately engages with both historical events and the daily fabric of Goan life, while also documenting Kerkar’s artwork, which the author says integrates art and environment in a work of enduring beauty and resistance.
