Are online taxis App-solutely necessary?

In comparison to other states, the taxi system in Goa is a far cry from what it should be. A few tourist taxi operators have marred the reputation of the system due to their unethical business practices.

Ridiculously high tariffs and unprofessional behaviour have been causing concern among locals who avoid these services. Usually tourists are the ones most affected.

So why aren’t private players entering Goa? We have seen them change the taxi industry in metros like Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. For all practical purposes, the presence of taxi operators like Ola and Uber will not only make commuting easy but also play a major role in the further development of the State as a tourist destination.

But this change may not take place anytime soon. Main reason being Goan Taxi unions are very strong and do not react well to competition. If Ola or Uber had to set foot in Goa, this would disrupt their local business, as these tourist cabs have a fixed tariff (not at all negotiable) which would also cause a glitch in customer services in the State.

Goans have watched these unions vehemently oppose such services over the years. In addition multiple transport options are available. Locals in particular, prefer two wheeler taxis (known as Pilots) as they are more convenient and reasonable or autorickshaws, to get around. Further, there have been improvements in the frequency of local buses with reasonable fares.

So the questions still remains.  Is the local transport up-to-the-mark? Are online Taxis ‘App-solutely’ necessary to provide better facilities to the Goans?
