Ukidiche Modak holds a special place in Goan and Maharashtrian households during Ganesh Chaturthi, the festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Considered his favorite sweet, these steamed dumplings symbolize devotion, tradition, and the joy of family celebrations.

What is Ukidiche Modak?

Ukidiche Modak are steamed rice flour dumplings filled with a fragrant mixture of freshly grated coconut and jaggery, flavored with cardamom. The word Ukad means “steam” in Marathi and Konkani, hence the name. Unlike the fried version, this delicacy is lighter, softer, and often considered healthier.

The Making of Ukidiche Modak

  • Rice Flour Dough: The outer covering is made from rice flour kneaded with hot water until smooth and pliable.
  • Sweet Filling: The filling consists of coconut, melted jaggery, and a hint of cardamom, sometimes enhanced with sesame seeds or dry fruits.
  • Shaping & Steaming: The dough is skillfully shaped into small cups, filled with the mixture, sealed into a conical modak form, and then steamed until glossy and soft.

Cultural Significance

In Goa, families prepare this Modak as an offering to Lord Ganesha, especially on the first day of Ganesh Chaturthi. Serving 21 modaks is considered auspicious, as it signifies abundance and blessings. Beyond being a festive treat, the dish represents togetherness, since the whole family often gathers in the kitchen to make them.
