Today, the world’s resources are depleting fast. Humans are consuming or wasting every available resource faster than it can be generated. Plastic and other non-biodegradable trash can be found everywhere, on land and in our waters too. Social media is rife with videos and articles about how garbage is rapidly taking over the world. People are trying but it seems like nothing can be done to curb the problem. But one college in Goa is trying their best to make a change. And they’ve won an award for their hard work over two consecutive years. VMSIIHE has been declared the Cleanest College in the state.
An award for the Cleanest College in the State
VMSIIHE is a premier hospitality management college located in South Goa. The college has a perfect combination of academic learning and world-class infrastructure. This possibly makes it the best place for people looking to make a career in the global hospitality industry. Affiliated to the Goa University, the college has strong international exchange programs and internships and placements in starred hotels. All this will ultimately help in creating a strong foundation for hotel management professionals.
The college is also all about being eco-friendly. They run a water-harvesting unit on the campus as well as a sewage treatment plant. Not only does it ensure the campus remains clean but it has also won the college the prestigious ‘Swachchatam Mahavidyalaya Samman’. This is an award that is applicable to 35 institutes in Goa which are affiliated with the Goa University.
The Water-Harvesting unit and the sewage treatment plant at VMSIIHE, the Cleanest College in Goa
Water harvesting is something that more of the world needs to do. Goa isn’t far away from losing its water supply with the way things are going. It’s interesting to learn how the cleanest college in Goa went about creating a Water harvesting unit and sewage treatment plant on campus.
The Water-Harvesting unit
VMSIIHE is very eco-conscious and spares no efforts to ensure that everything is done in an eco-friendly manner. Rainwater harvesting project was built, taking into consideration, the saving of water, minimizing the cost of water and rainwater being the cleanest form of water. This would be our contribution in taking care of the water shortage issue across the state thereby offering a helping hand to the waterworks department.
The rainwater harvesting project is handled by the engineering department under the able guidance of the Chief Engineer Mr. Sunil Deshpande.
The Sewage treatment plant
The Sewage Treatment plant was built taking into consideration saving of water, as the used water can be reused for gardening and we have a UF filtration plant attached to our sewage treatment plant so that the filtered water can be reused even for flushing of toilets, resulting in less consumption of fresh water. This is a statutory requirement of the pollution control board.
The sewage treatment plant is run by an approved vendor on contract basis for 12 hours (i.e. 7 am to 7 pm). The balance 12 hours is taken care of by the engineering department since the sewage treatment plant is a continuous process plant.
The institute continues to set the bar for the cleanest campus and had won the award previously for the year 2016-17. This year, the award was received by Prof. Irfan Mirza, Principal and Director of VMSIIHE at the hands of Goa’s CM, Manohar Parrikar. The award was given at the 30th Annual Convocation Ceremony of Goa University, in the presence of Shri Ram Nath Kovind, President of India; Smt. Savita Kovind, First Lady of India and Her Excellency Smt. Mridula Sinha, Governor of Goa.
