Candolim Beach to become wheelchair-friendly
Umoja, an online travel service for people with special needs has conceptualised a beach festival with a difference. Scheduled to kick-start on the famous Candolim Beach in North Goa from 31st March to 9th April, 2017, ‘BeachFest2017’ will showcase Candolim beach as India’s first completely wheelchair accessible beach. Now those with mobility needs can enjoy ease of access to the beach and various other places in Goa.
Hundreds of wheelchair users from across the country have registered. And expected to descend upon Candolim beach on 31st March 2017, according to the organisers. To make this event an unforgettable experience, Umoja joined hands with ‘disabled persons organisations’, beach shacks, watersport operators and hotels to transform Candolim Beach into India’s first completely wheelchair accessible beach, informed Avelino de Sa, President of Disability Rights Association of Goa to ‘The Hindu’. Special Water rides have been planned for them.
‘Freedom Cabs’ another step in the right direction
To make traveling easy for those with mobility needs, CEO of Umoja travels, Yeshwat Holkar along with the organisers have collaborated with a local operator to create Goa’s first and only wheelchair accessible taxi service –‘Freedom Cabs’. Enabling entire families to travel together.
A ‘Wheelchair User’s Guide to Goa’ has also been created. This guide covers over 35 wheelchair accessible hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions.
Through this campaign, the organisers wish to raise awareness about Goa being a ‘wheelchair friendly’ and accessible destination. Thus, enabling the whole family to experience fun in the sun on the beautiful sands and waters of Goa.
